Long Road Back: Vietnam Remembered was a documentary produced in 1985 based on the Nunn Center’s Vietnam War Oral History Project. “Long Road Back: Vietnam Remembered” was produced by the University of Kentucky’s Office of Instructional Resources and aired on Kentucky Educational Television (KET) in November 1985. Dean of Libraries Dr. Terry Birdwhistell and renowned UK History professor Dr. George Herring served as the primary interviewers on this documentary. This set of oral history interviews documented veterans’ experiences in Vietnam, including boot camp, combat, in-country survival, medical care available to combat troops, and the transition home into civilian life. The full-length interviews from this documentary are currently being indexed and will be available online this month.
On March 8 1965, United States Marines landed at Da Nang, Vietnam. This was the “first deployment of a battalion-sized U.S. combat unit to Vietnam.” The Nunn Center is proud to post this powerful documentary online and share important stories of Kentucky’s Vietnam veterans.
