Featured Interview with Guitar Legend Dick Dale

In honor of guitar legend Dick Dale who passed away this week, we are featuring our 1998 oral history interview with Dale.  The interviewer was Susan Schmidt Horning who was interviewing Dale for her book Chasing Sound: Technology, Culture, and the Art of Studio Recording from Edison to the LP published in 2013.  In this interview, Schmidt Horning and legendary guitarist Dick Dale discuss his career as a musician and the influence he had on rock and roll music.  Dale discusses the musical artists who influenced him and the history of what became known as the ‘surf sound.’ Dale then elaborates on his collaboration with Leo Fender, founder of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, who developed a specialized amplification unit specifically for Dale’s use.
